I am a hand-builder who uses a variety of clay bodies and decorative surface techniques, specializing in slab-building. My sculptural work is informed by first-hand experience of the people, situations and concerns that I encounter in my daily life. The resulting figurative sculptures and painted pots attempt to capture a moment and the fleeting moods that might accompany it.
These Yunomi are slab-built with porcelain clay, painted simply with black underglaze. When we first became aware of COVID 19 we wondered if nearness to others might be dangerous, and our hands became a focus point. Washing them, trying to limit our sense of touch to our faces and other surfaces. I wanted to explore ‘hands’ and ‘touch’ as a theme on the surface of something that is ultimately an intimate hand held object.
Originally from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, I am now a Melbourne based artist. I have a Master of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff and have been working with ceramics in arts education for almost 20 years. I taught fine art with ceramics at Eton College in England before immigrating to Melbourne in October 2018.
