Bio
Tilla Rodemann was born and raised in Eastern Germany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, a degree in textile arts, and the birth of two children, she relocated with her family to Massachusetts in 2001. Here she took informal pottery classes at Mudflat Pottery School. Her goal was to create beautiful functional objects for her own kitchen. Over time, her skill level and aesthetic vision converged. Today, she is a full time studio potter at Mudflat Studios in Somerville, Massachusetts. Her work has been shown and sold in Galleries and at juried and invitational exhibitions.
Artist Statement
What drew me into ceramics in the first place was the intention to make functional pots.
Pots for every day use. Functionality is my first focus. My work is wheel thrown porcelain, which is demanding in the process, and very rewarding with its brilliance and durability in the end.
I like to keep shapes simple. But decoration is no less important to me than form. I draw on my pots after bisque firing. I draw on pots almost like I would on paper. The fire leaves a final mark on the drawing, that is not entirely predictable. My vocabulary includes repetitive pattern, animals and domestic objects.
My shapes, designs and images are contemporary, but draw from a long tradition of painted functional pots. Some influences I brought with me from my native Germany, where I grew up in Meissen and Dresden, an area with a very rich history of ceramic manufacturing.
