From the artist: I recently retired from academia. My first goal after leaving the university was to build new kilns at my home studio to support my future work. I have a few firings under my belt now. All but one piece in the show was fired in my new soda kiln. I've added a few new glazes to my pallet and the kiln is firing quite well. I appreciate being able to spend time in my studio everyday. I continue to explore ways of developing new ideas and approaches when generating new work. I like that ceramics is a slow and methodical process. I'm just not in a big hurry these days.
The work is wheel thrown stoneware. Simple forms are thrown thick and then a subtractive method is used with a standard cut-off wire. I'm fascinated with glaze surface. Pieces are sprayed with multiple slips and glazes. I fire the work in a recently constructed soda kiln. Most of my work is driven by utility but I do feel my work can exist as a sculptural object.
