From the artist: This work was made exploring more surface design and medieval inspired themes, critters often protesting what was being written in the text. They are inspired by the monsters on the edges of maps and illuminated manuscripts mixed with some pop culture and textile designs. I try to be spontaneous and meet a piece where it is at, while having a conversation with the form and discussing its surface. in a pursuit to remain human I have tried to relax and let the clay be clay. my surfaces were breathing and I realized I wasn't letting the pots breathe, and so now, they remain organic and natural and feel more connected to the decoration.
I tend to be sporadic and making work for me, is a lot like jazz improv. whatever clay makes sense at the time I will use, be it cone 10 stoneware, porcelain or cone 6 stoneware. They are decorated with slips stains and washes with clear glazed interiors. I am beginning to work with more color and I'm pretty floored about it, I will still make work with minimal color but I've been enjoying learning about new stains and trying some mono typing.
