About the work in this show - When I was building this group of pots, I thought of both the abundance of flowers coming into bloom with the change of seasons, as well as how the pots would work as groups on one's table or shelf. In making the bud vase form, my goal was a full belly that would stretch my designs so they might shift and distort with the volume. When they are placed in groups, these curves visually overlap in a way that extends the surface from one pot to the next. In selecting the pots for this solo show, I imagined a table with the bud vases and candlesticks clustered down the center, bringing the table abloom.
I used two different clays for this collection. The black background with mixed flowers is on a red stoneware clay. The contrasting work is a light stoneware with specks that is mostly left unglazed on the background, with hand-painted green leaves and bright flowers that remind me of the freshness of spring florals. If you look closely, you will see details I added to the flowers with underglaze pencil. These are my newest surfaces, and I love the visual depth of the glazing as well as the physical texture that the design creates—especially on the tall tumblers. Enjoy!
