Artist Statement

From formation to decoration, my functional pottery coalesces aesthetic pleasure with tactile experience. Drawing on sensory perception invites engagement in use. Tethered together by the object as a physical boundary, I am interested in the negotiation between the material and the maker and the connection to its emotional response in the user. I work in repetitions of activity and object. My process involves multiple forming methods – by wheel, hand, or mold. Form language is remade and refined over time with the intention of improving each piece from the last.

The fresh porcelain forms are opportunities for new surface integrations. Highly patterned yet abstract surfaces combine negative and positive space, transparency and color to form new meanings left open to viewer interpretation. Inspired by confetti, candy and games, my pattern designs note marks of celebration that invoke an attitude of enjoyment for the present moment.
