ARTIST BIO
Andy Boswell began his ceramic journey learning from his father, Ray Boswell, in the American Folk Pottery tradition. He studied
ceramics at RIT under Julia Galloway, Rich Hirsch, and Liz Howe, blending historical awareness with contemporary insight. A pivotal
mentorship with ceramic engineer Phil Hamling deepened his technical expertise and introduced him to crystalline glazes. Since
2014, Andy has worked to make these glazes more functional, consistent, and food-safe—solving long-standing technical
challenges. He now works exclusively in crystalline porcelain and shares his findings openly, reflecting his commitment to quality,
innovation, and supporting the wider ceramics community through transparency and craftsmanship.
Artist Statement
My work is about exploring a specific type of beauty. Beauty where the process is as intricate, delicate and refined as the result.
Beauty that captivates, inspires and brings joy to us as we unravel and understand its complexities.
Crystalline Glazed Porcelain has this type of beauty. The process is so difficult and requires so much work. There are so many
delicate techniques I need to perform with extreme expertise. I need to have precise control over the science of the materials while
my sense of aesthetics is constantly tested. This all builds up to the moment where I take my hands away, give up the controls,
present my work to the kiln and let nature make the final marks. The crystals organically grow on the surface and craft a level of
detailed splendor that can’t be found anywhere else.
In this there are so many hidden harmonies between what we would consider opposites. I make the difficult look easy. I impose so
much control, but ultimately let go. What I make is man made but also nature made. The scientific and the artistic come together.
These vessels hold so much more than coffee and tea. They hold a beauty that runs deep. That beauty is what my work is about.
Curriculum Vitae
Curriculum Vitae for Andy Boswell of Boswell Studios.
2003 - 2007:
Studied Ceramics at the Rochester Institute of Technology under Julia Galloway, Rich Hirsch and Liz Howe.
2007-2012:
Began teaching wheel throwing classes on the first floor of the Bostree Studio, which has been continued to the present.
Started my own business focusing on dinnerware, cone 10 reduction, celadon glazes on porcelain with subtle carving.
Sold to an assortment of local galleries and local shows like the New Paltz Crafts Fair in New York and the Armory Art Fair in Morristown, New Jersey.
At the end of 2012, I began collaborating with Phil Hamling, a ceramic engineer and owner of Zircar Ceramics, who had an interest in Crystalline Glazes but needed a local potter to work with.
2013-2017:
Continued teaching classes and experimenting with crystalline glazes, but mostly took a hiatus from pottery to play competitive Magic, the Gathering. Top finishes are available upon request but the game took me to an assortment of places across the US with notable locations including Las Vegas and
Honolulu. Outside the US, I competed in events such as Dublin (Ireland), Madrid (Spain), Vancouver, Toronto and Quebec City (Canada).
2018:
Perfected my technique to control crystalline glazes to improve food safety and ensure there was no running so that glaze catchers were not needed.
Released my first series of video tutorials to share this information on crystalline glazes and wheel throwing techniques.
