BIO:

Brame’s initial love in art was paint.  It was the love of the ability of paint to be manipulated to create color and texture on a flat surface that draws your attention and makes you want to reach out and touch it.

After years of taking a break from art, Brame took a local pottery class for therapy.  She found herself in the local community clay center several days a week and wanted more.

Clay is her way of thinking outside of the box and outside of her comfort zone while having some fun playing in the mud.  She found that clay offered things that paint cannot.  Clay gives the challenge of transforming a lump of mud into something useful through the utilization of the spinning wheel, dexterity, and coordination.  It makes her think ten steps ahead so that the transformation is successful.  It also provides a bonus.  Once done with the creation process, Brame can still revert back to her love of color and texture with slip and glazes.  There is not only a useful platter, but a canvas to paint on as well.  For Brame, this is the best of all worlds.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My first taste of art was with paint, oils specifically.  I loved the idea of color and texture by manipulating the surface of the canvas with thick paint.  Clay offers me things paint cannot.

I love the challenge of transforming a lump of mud using a spinning wheel and my own dexterity and coordination.  Clay makes me think ten steps ahead to form, function, and finishes.    Once I am done, I can revert back to my love of color and texture with slip and glazes.  I not only have my useful platter, but a canvas to paint on as well.

I find that I am most drawn to those pieces I can touch.  I incorporate that in my own work by creating pieces that are durable, useful, and colorful.  For as much as I want to pick up a piece, I want the viewer to want to do the same with my work.  Pick it up.  Turn it around.  Use it….
