STATEMENT:
My work is the result of combining a deep passion for drawing, painting, and ceramics. I aim to keep things playful but a little uncanny, with room for viewers to bring their own interpretation. At the moment I have a toddler and four hounds at home, and the wonder and play of everyday life with them is a constant source of inspiration. I visually reference a broad range of sources: ancient Persian ceramics, 18th century European porcelain, outsider folk art, and contemporary illustration, among others.
BIO:
Boo Lee (b. 1991) grew up in Chicago and studied ceramics and painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before establishing a home studio in southwestern Michigan. Working in pigmented porcelain, he produces pottery and wall-based pieces through a process of slip casting, wheel throwing, and hand building. His surfaces are built using colored slip, paper stencils, and a precise slip-trailing/impasto technique, creating a tactile low-relief effect akin to sprigging.
