Like the rings of a log constructing a cabin, the imprints of flame that remain on clay after a wood firing, or the continuity of grasses woven to form a basket, this body of work evokes the passing of time—a perception of how time passes quickly and occasionally slow. Line quality is that perception’s aesthetic translation. Combining the slow rolling of coils with the fluid and quick wheel thrown elements illustrates time’s perplexity. Coil seams and shadows, their visual depths and slow progression impart elements of stillness. Slight pressure and rhythm changes in the coil work create subtle irregularities relatable to human experience, beckoning the touch that reads between lines and speaks to the qualities of a whole form; the work welcomes itself into the hands of others, implicating an experience with the sense of touch that is often disregarded in today’s culture of constant visual stimulation. It is essential that the soft coil seams and inner thumb marks aren't smoothed over—that the clay body is unglazed, raw, and translucent, if the piece is to convey the vulnerability, honesty, and random, hidden depths to which artistry and life is inextricably bound.
