After 25 years of working in clay, utility continues to serve as the foundation for my ideas. The pots I make, no matter how simple or complex, are meant to be experienced on a physical and visual level. The way an object carries, lifts, cradles, pours and contains are properties which I strive to make engaging for the user, offering more than just convenience.

After an initial stage of concept drawing the idea evolves by working in multiples. The serial approach not only keeps me focused on progressively solving the immediate problems but also presents, at various stages throughout the process, numerous possibilities for other work

It seems that the contemporary potters whose work has impact and a strong sense of the maker are those who make connections to ceramic history. It is such a vast source of inspiration its hard to ignore. I live in a house that is filled with folk pottery from our own North American tradition, China and a lesser number of European examples. I have been to Europe three times and to China twice primarily to get close to the museum collections for a better understanding, not to mention the thrill of being in the environment they were made in.

Ancient Chinese bronze vessels have recently inspired a more formal attitude in the work. In addition I have been including rural architectural references that suggest a sense of monumentality within a functional scale.

The use of pressed molded forms combined with thrown elements has facilitated the development of some of these new ideas. The process is a refreshing change from 25 years of throwing and has generated a new way of thinking about form, which has few limitations.

BIOGRAPHY

Bruce Cochrane is an internationally acclaimed ceramic artist and recently retired Professor Emeritus of Ceramics at Sheridan College. During his 30 plus years of teaching at Sheridan he was instrumental in developing the Ceramic Program’s reputation as one of the best in Canada. He is himself one of Canada’s pre-eminent ceramic artists with work featured in public and private collections around the world.

Bruce’s studies began at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and continued in Alfred, New York at the New York State College of Ceramics where he received his Masters of Fine Art. Since his graduation in 1978 Bruce has participated in over 300 exhibitions, and shares his knowledge through lectures, workshops and as an advisor at Harbourfront Craft Studios and the Mississauga Living Art Centre. He is sought after as a visiting artist all over North America.

In 2004 Bruce was honoured by the Ontario Crafts Council with the John Mather Award for his outstanding contribution to craft in Ontario. Throughout his career Bruce has remained devoted to his practice and the development of Canadian craft through teaching, exhibitions and publications. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England and the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa to name a few.
