BIO
Caleb Zouhary earned his MFA in Ceramics at the University of North Texas in 2014. Currently he works in his home studio on the edge of the forest in northeast Ohio. He draws inspiration from the natural world, making primarily functional tableware that fits seamlessly into contemporary life using thoughtful forms, organic patterns, and vibrant colors to complement the user in their daily rituals.
Caleb also owns and operates a community pottery studio alongside a team of talented individuals who, in addition to teaching classes, build their own art portfolios while learning the commercial side of ceramics. This community space is centered around the idea that art should be accessible to everyone, and it provides a space for artists of all skill levels to use clay to express their creativity.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is drawn toward ecological patterns, a reflection of my daily life at my home on the edge of the forest. The patterns in my work incorporate nature on a macro level, bringing a vibrancy and sense of movement to the fractal-inspired designs I emphasize throughout my surfaces. By pushing the boundaries of pattern with intensity of color and scale, familiar natural beauty is transformed to fit seamlessly into contemporary life and a variety of styles.
Much like the transformation of surfaces, perfecting form is an ever-evolving labor of love. Whether refining a perfectly pouring spout or getting the comfort of a handle just right, I’m constantly re-examining, experimenting, and finding ways to make each piece a delight to use. In my quest for ultimate functionality, I introduced innovations like flameware for teapots, stovetop cooking, and bakeware, allowing pottery to address the daily needs of modern cooking without sacrificing the liveliness or quality of surface design.
