As a latch key kid, I loved to draw and paint to entertain myself. I
later traded canvas for clay, and paint for slips to express my inner
thoughts. Learning pottery during my fellowship in Koishiwara
Japan, I fell in love with the traditional slip decorations, which has
given continuity in my artwork.
I think of myself as a folk potter, connecting with traditions and
added embellishments in simple ways that create a unique style
that is recognizable as my personal signature. I paint with pattern
and design in an automatic way building layer upon layer to create
depth of color with a celebratory theme in mind. The layers of
color and pattern contain an emptiness too, with openings to exit
and re-enter to invite the viewer to revisit.
I feel my artwork is a success if you smile when you see and use
my pottery.
