In my work I strive to make pottery that the viewer can connect with and hopefully open up a dialogue between two people. My exploration of surfaces, forms, and imagery helps to spark conversation. Growing up in a family run men’s workwear store, blue collar men would often come in and share stories from work, the past, or a dirty joke over a cup of coffee. I push my work to make it appear as if it has come from the past by adding layers of terra sigillata, slips, and underglaze. By adding various image transfer techniques I allow the viewer to connect with a shape, a graphic, or pop culture icon. Which furthers the exploration of conversation. When drawing from the past I will often use references of old enamel cookware, classic magazine ads, and mid-century and pop art of the 50s and 60s.
