ARTIST BIO

For most of his life, Doug Hanson has been part of the art scene; his mother and sister were both artists. Since joining the faculty at Cornell College in Mount Vernon (1971-2012), Professor Hanson has tried his best to create a welcoming and creative atmosphere for students and anyone interested in the arts. He’s been making pottery for 54 years and says—while firing up his home kiln—"I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

Originally from Minnesota, he earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology and moved to Iowa in 1969 to pursue master’s degrees in ceramics, ceramic-sculptures, and drawing at the University of Iowa followed by 41 years of teaching studio art and art history at Cornell.

In retirement, he spends his time landscaping his rural acreage and creating pottery pieces—many of which are inspired by his vast garden. When asked what he likes most about his art he says “I’ve always enjoyed making something beautiful that people can use.” He also relishes opening his kiln to see how his pots turn out. “Me and the fire have to work together to create something special.”
