Artist Statement

I am drawn to work that shows struggle and presence of the hand. Asian pots particularly Korean Punchung and Japanese pots from the Momoyama period have been an influence on my work since I began in the late 60’s. My work is about the immediacy and act of making and has little to do with academia, correctness or technical aspects. I am more interested in the flaws than the flawless.

Biography

Metropoulos McCauley, a Greek/American potter,  has had 40 solo exhibitions, been included in over 400 exhibitions internationally and included in collections in 13 countries. He is the recipient of 3 National Endowment For the Arts Grants and numerous state and private grants since he began working in clay in 1967. He has been featured in books, magazines and film, detailed in his resume. Metropoulos McCauley has conducted 450 workshops in the North America, Eastern and Western Europe and Asia. He has 2 films to his credit and his video series, Georges House of Clay Wednesday Night Videos, continues to be a hit. He is an iconoclast devoted to making work that he wants to make in the face of changes in the ceramic field.
