There is a sense of honesty and purity to be found in physical labor. The pursuit of these qualities in my daily life and my artwork is a driving force in my artistic career. During childhood I was brought up to have a high level of self sufficiency, physical labor was expected and honored. I find a familiarity and comfort in the labor demanded of me as an artist. The ongoing search for this honest lifestyle has led me to functional pottery and the wood firing process. I want my work to embody the honest, simple spirit that I strive to instill in myself through physical labor. The wood firing process directs my work. I create shapes that catch the wood ash and exploit the gentle, curving marks of the flame and flashing produced in the kiln. I create pieces in harmony with my choice of firing method, with a quiet, austere surface that acts as a canvass. Textures and curves that are accented through the firing work to further harmonize the beginning and end making processes. Line, particularly the curve of a line, acts as a inspiration for me as it pulls the eye around the pot. I want the mark of the flame to travel around the piece in the same way, accentuating the curves of the form. A dialogue is developed between the form and the firing so that a process is visible. Each piece has an individual narrative laid down in the kiln. Personalities are created, inviting the user to touch the pot, enjoy it, and use it again and again. The firing marks cause consideration and awareness of the depth involved with the process. As I strive to combine my forms with the variables of the wood fired kiln I am encouraging a collaboration between the form and fire that is fully realized as my pieces reach the hands’ of the user.
