ARTIST BIO:
Joan is a 1980 graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Her areas of concentration included Ceramics and Photography. Post graduation, Joan began a photo related career in Sheboygan WI and continued to pursue creative expression through her photography, painting, and handmade paper.
In January 2015, a job change took Joan to Cedar Falls IA. A year later, she discovered the Independent Study program in Ceramics at the Hearst Center for the Arts and rekindled her passion for clay while taking advantage of their facilities. Two years later, she set up her own studio and began marketing her ceramic work at art fairs.
Now, working from a small commercial building in Bellevue IA, Joan’s current ceramic work includes a series of anthropomorphic vessels that are influenced by both nature and structure in form and surface. The wheel thrown components are altered or assembled, some combining organic shapes with more engineered or patterned decorative elements. The surfaces evoke a sense of age and weather.
