I believe in the power of handmade pottery. Ceramics has the ability to enrich the lives they serve, something that can’t be understood without experience. A pots success or failure begins with proportions, weight, and balance. Beyond these formalities is the uniquely personal information left behind by hands on wet clay recorded at the wheel and preserved with heat. Such traits, plus the look and feel of a glaze, influence the users experience well beyond the simple act of function.
Something rather powerful can occur when handling or using a handmade object. There is a connection between user and maker that cannot be duplicated elsewhere in day-to-day life. Knowing a favorite potter created, held, and pondered the very piece in my hand is remarkable. While holding a vessel that’s hundreds of years old, I love imaging the maker (often unknown), the space the piece was created, the materials used and the world at that time. Potters before me who gathered clay, formed, and fired influence and inspire my work today.
In the end, I make pots because there’s little I would rather do. Without question, the greatest artistic compliment occurs when my pots create an aesthetic attraction upon entering individuals’ private lives.
Joe Singewald grew up in northeast Iowa where he discovered handmade pottery. He is a 2003 graduate from the University of Wisconsin–Rivers Falls and received a MFA from Utah State University. His utilitarian vessels have been in multiple exhibitions throughout the country, including NCECA Clay National, Strictly Functional Pottery National and Utilitarian Clay—Celebrate the Object. Singewald was a 2015 Jerome Ceramic Artist Project Grant recipient, facilitated by Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis and is currently the Art Department Studio Technician and Adjunct Professor of Art at the College of Saint Benedict and St. John’s University in central Minnesota. He lives and maintains a studio in Cold Spring, MN with his wife and three daughters.
