I work extensively with the potter's wheel, where many functional pieces are begun and then altered, using wooden tools (ribs) I've created. Additionally, I often hand build asymmetrical forms, some of which use dyes of my own design or an extrusion process. In the present phases of my work beginning in 2010 I am increasingly employing significant amounts of embossed textures under the slips and glazes to add yet another aspect of depth to the final appearance of many of my pots.

To accomplish this embossing process I have made several hundred tools that are used to engrave, imprint, burn and otherwise alter the surfaces of wooden panels and other implements of forming on which the clay may be rolled, pressed and enhanced.

In the final stages of making, glazing becomes my focus. With over 50 (no-lead) glazes to choose from, I overlay up to four of them sequentially, often using a wax resist technique. For me, this phase of work is a wonderful chance to touch the pieces one last time before firing the work. The pieces are then fired in one of the three kilns (reduction fire, stoneware or soda fire - each designed and built by me) and fired to 2400 degrees.

My work in the studio is enhanced and balanced by accepting a limited number of invitations to lead ceramics workshops in the U.S.A. and other countries. Additionally, I make an effort to share ideas with others through writing, lectures, and tours of my studio.

I also offer year-long artist-in-residence training periodically as a way to help young potters learn about techniques, philosophies and goals in a full-time studio pottery.
