ARTIST STATEMENT
I often find myself personifying the work I make. As a potter, I am constantly working in an iterative manner, producing multiples of an object – An army of ewers for example. I’m always searching for small moments of discovery that result in new direction or solutions to a problem. This formal exploration is a natural pathway for a potter but is reinforced by the environment I was raised in. I grew up and started working in an environment marked by job sites and tradesmen as a teenager. It was the tools, attire and vernacular of intent present at these sites that informed my interests in utility, workmanship and function. Tradesmen carried and wore specific things that displayed what their role was in constructing a house. Roofers had their protective sunhats, flooring guys donned knee pads and painters such as myself wore whites. In my studio practice, I want to make obvious what the pots intended use is. I find it helpful as a maker to think about these things and allow them to guide the formal decision making and critical thinking that happens in the studio. It’s the spout of a ewer, the strainer in a teapot and even the foot of a mug that can enhance or reduce the effectivity of a pot. I want the function of the piece to be at the forefront and it’s this foundation that guides me in my endeavors in clay. The end goal of these efforts is to have produced something that does its job well.
My work is made from porcelaneous and iron rich stoneware clays that are then fired in a wood burning kiln to roughly 2350 degrees Fahrenheit. This type of firing yields surfaces that range from glossy blues and greens, to deep reds, oranges and pinks. Wood firing allows me to work with a community of people who all share a common interest while still understanding the laborious and rewarding nature of this kind of firing.
