In my work, I am attempting to help people reconnect with everyday functional objects that are often overlooked and over-consumed. Mass-produced utilitarian objects are typically underwhelming in terms of design and service. By designing and making objects with consideration of function and purpose, I hope to encourage people to think more critically about the functional objects they consume, and how they impact our lives. In contrast to the pace of the modern world, my studio practice is slow and thoughtful, which is evident in the craftsmanship, design, and purpose of the pots. I work in small batches to encourage thought, play, and experimentation. My pots are hand-built using a combination of slabs and coils, which leaves their surfaces dimpled by my fingertips. A hand-carved pattern wraps the exterior and colour is added to accentuate form and texture. The combination of dimply softness and colour elicits interaction and investigation. The marks made during production invite the user to explore the process of how the objects were made, which hopefully allows the user to engage with the pots differently.
