Schooled with the sons and daughters of Boeing engineers near Seattle, it was assumed that Kirk would follow in his father’s footsteps. Instead he became a newspaper artist on the basis that a job should be both fun and meaningful. He’d been introduced to pottery, ironically, by Patti Warashina but he didn’t think it would be a realistic choice for him career wise. He did, however, continue with clay while working at the St Paul Pioneer Press. It was a matter of time before Kirk started drawing on his pots. Subjects often reflect issues that are gnawing at him, such as the insect apocalypse, but just as often are a celebration of life. Keeping him humble, Kirk wood fires with his wife Jil Franke and Linda Christianson.
