ARTIST BIO
Lori Elling is an emerging ceramic artist based in Metro Vancouver, Canada. She is community educated via online and local workshops, classes, and interactions with elder ceramicists and potters.
Lori creates functional ceramics with a strong focus on surface design. Her surfaces are abstract and bold, with saturated color palettes and embossed relief. Her forms are rooted in practicality, simplicity and functionality, with a bit of flair.
Since 2024, Lori has participated in several annual themed group exhibitions in the USA and Canada, and has been invited to share her approach to surface design with her first online workshop with the Ceramic School this summer.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work in hand built functional ceramics is a holistic balance between function and flair - exploring forms that are simple and pragmatic, and complimentary to my bold, abstract, and often chaotic surface design. My surfaces use negative space as an active design element to provide a kind of structure for saturated colour compositions to play in, and off of.
I work primarily with slab construction, and incorporate surface embellishments with underglazes and glazes, and textures imprinted on, added to, and carved into the clay.
As an artist, my inner intention is to create a personal visual language to uplift, process and understand the interpersonal, political, and spiritual influences at work in this post-truth era. My outer intention is to create joyful pots for color and texture afficionados, and folks who appreciate visual and tactile stims with their cooking and refueling experiences.
