ARTIST BIO

Morgan Levine is a ceramic artist creating functional stoneware
tableware using tinted slips. First drawn to pottery as a child, she
studied Industrial Design with an interest in tabletop, continuing her
ceramics practice throughout college. After working as a craft and
prop stylist, she established her studio practice in 2019.

Her work centers on the expressive potential of slip, capturing its
fluid movement as it flows and layers across each surface. Preserved
through firing, each piece becomes a record of a singular moment in
time. While intuitive in process, her approach is informed by the long
history of marbled surfaces across cultures.

Balancing precision with unpredictability, Levine’s work features
contemporary palettes, intricate patterns, and refined finishes,
resulting in pieces that are both functional and visually dynamic.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I create functional pottery using tinted stoneware slips. Beyond
utility, these pieces are a love letter to the material
itself—centering slip as both surface and structure, revealing
process, and celebrating its idiosyncratic behavior. I believe that
the act of making, with all its decisions and problem-solving, deepens
a maker’s vision and meaningfully shapes the world around them. After
years of experimentation and dialogue with historical and contemporary
ceramics, I launched my practice in 2019.

My work seeks to capture the spontaneous movement of viscous slip as
it flows, collides, and settles—over and under itself—while
maintaining a disciplined consistency of form and pattern. Each vessel
becomes a record of a singular moment, fixed through vitrification.
While immediate and intuitive, this approach is rooted in a long
global history of marbled surfaces across mediums.

Intricate motifs, a clear glaze, and a polished, thrown foot come
together to create tableware that is both durable and visually
absorbing. Contemporary in palette and pattern yet familiar in spirit,
the work balances precision with unpredictability. Each piece bears
the trace of my hand alongside the fleeting fluidity of the clay. The
result is a crisp delineation of color softened by undulating,
psychedelic movement. Grouped together, the vessels form a visual
lexicon of slip’s expressive range and a cumulative record of process.
