I am fascinated by the rich history and use of handmade pottery in our everyday lives and rituals. My work is influenced by my previous experience as a production potter. I take the simple forms that I learned from that experience and transform them into my own personal style by exaggerating the forms to make them more dynamic as well placing geometric patterns that relate to their forms.
My designs are derived from the geometric patterning on crystal-whiskey decanters, stitching on quilts and button tufted upholstery; I then simplify these patterns on my vessels. The feet and rims on my vessels are strongly defined areas, creating a frame, while the areas between provide space for me to place my different designs.
I alter my forms by stamping a symmetrical, repetitive pattern on the surface to create the upholstered or cut glass design on each piece. The work I make has small variations in form, which allows me to explore different patterns. The different designs give each piece their own unique quality, while still working within my basic fundamental aesthetic. I choose glazes that will break and pool over the indented lines, in order to accentuate the geometric patterning on each vessel.
My pots are for everyday use, yet also reflect a sense of elegance and refinement. The ability to craft and share these beautiful objects with others is what drives me to create and discover my own voice in this timeless art form.
