ARTIST STATEMENT
Nom Ceramics is the collaborative practice of Scott and Rebeca Proctor based in Austin, Texas. As owners of East Side Pot Shop, a community ceramics studio, they have cultivated a shared dialogue through making, teaching, and experimentation. Founded in 2019, Nom Ceramics emerged from this ongoing exchange, creating space for a collaborative studio practice that continues to evolve through mutual influence and exploration.
For Nom Ceramics, Scott and Rebeca create objects that investigate the relationship between form, surface, and process. Hand-built and wheel-thrown forms serve as frameworks for layered glaze compositions, where intricate patterning, linework, and atmospheric effects respond to and activate the contours of each piece.
Central to their practice is a commitment to atmospheric firing. All work is fired to cone 10 in their soda kiln, and they also enjoy wood firing. These processes introduce elements of unpredictability and collaboration with the kiln itself, producing nuanced surfaces that record the conditions of their making.
Drawing from historical ceramic forms, traditional firing methods, and contemporary approaches to material experimentation, Nom Ceramics creates functional forms meant to enhance everyday rituals. Their practice embraces the tension between control and chance, honoring the rich history of ceramics while exploring new possibilities within the medium.
Scott and Rebeca are currently living in the countryside outside of Austin, where they have a home studio, a soda kiln, and a future wood kiln. Together they are raising their two young sons, Finley and Huey. Their collaborative practice has become a wonderful way for Scott and Rebeca to connect outside of parenthood.
